Whether you\u2019re starting pilot training or simply curious about aviation, here\u2019s what you need to know about the language of the skies.<\/p><p><strong>What is the aviation phonetic alphabet?<\/strong><br \/>The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phonetic alphabet \u2013 the aviation alphabet \u2013 is a standardized system used by pilots and air traffic controllers to communicate clearly over the radio.<\/p><p>Each of the 26 letters in the alphabet is assigned a unique code word which is spelt how it is pronounced, so speakers say the word instead of the letter during radio transmissions. For example:<\/p><ul><li>Alpha for A<\/li><li>Bravo for B<\/li><li>Charlie for C<\/li><\/ul><p>&#8230;and so on through the alphabet.<\/p><p>Using full words instead of individual letters avoids misunderstanding or confusion caused by background noise, poor radio signals, or different accents.<\/p><p><strong>Why don&#8217;t pilots just use normal letters?<\/strong><br \/>Imagine trying to tell someone &#8220;B&#8221; over a crackly radio. Did they hear B, D, P or T?<\/p><p>Whether you&#8217;re reading an aircraft registration or confirming a call sign, using the aviation alphabet\u2019s standardized code words makes communication clearer and more consistent, wherever you are in the world.<\/p><p>Numbers are also communicated differently in the aviation world to improve clarity.
