So, you know you want to become a pilot. Now comes the next big decision: where should you train?

Just like colleges, no two flight schools are the same. From location and lifestyle to training programs and career opportunities, there are several factors to consider when choosing the right flight school for you.

Here are four things to consider before making your decision.

1. Location and lifestyle

Whether you’re planning to move across the country or stay closer to home, location can make a big difference in your flight training experience.

From flying along Florida’s coastline to navigating the mountains in Colorado, different locations offer unique opportunities to develop your flying skills.

States like Florida and Arizona are known for their year-round sunshine and favorable flying conditions, which can mean fewer weather-related cancellations and more time in the air.

It’s also worth thinking about life outside the flight deck, including housing, campus facilities, and the local community. Your flight school could become your home away from home, so finding a supportive community of like-minded people can make a real difference to your experience.

2. Training structure and programs

Not every aspiring pilot starts with the same levels of experience, and different flight schools offer different paths to becoming a pilot.

If you’re starting with little or no flying experience, a structured, full-time program at an FAA-certified Part 141 flight school, such as Skyborne, could be a good fit.

Alternatively, if you already hold a Private Pilot Certificate (PPL), you may be looking for a Partial Program, to take you from your Instrument Rating to Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and beyond.

3. Airline partnerships and career opportunities

If your goal is to fly for an airline, it’s worth looking beyond the certificates and ratings you’ll earn.

Some flight schools have airline partnerships that offer students access to mentorship and opportunities to connect with potential employers.

For example, Skyborne partners with US airlines SkyWest Airlines and Envoy Airlines, offering eligible trainees structured pathways towards an airline career.

4. Training costs and funding

Flight training is a significant investment, so understanding the full cost of your chosen program is essential.

Look beyond the advertised tuition and fees to find out what’s included, from flight hours and exams to housing, equipment, and additional training costs.

It’s also worth exploring your funding options. At Skyborne, eligible students can access financing through partners such as Sallie Mae and Stratus Financial. You may also be able to use 529 savings plans toward qualifying training expenses.

Exploring these options early can help you plan your training and make a more informed decision.

Why choose Skyborne for flight training?

At Skyborne, we know that choosing a flight school is about more than earning your pilot certificates and ratings. It’s about finding the right environment to develop your skills and prepare for a future career in aviation.
