Born in Samoa, Raised on Determination
“I was born in Fagamalo and raised in Lelepa and Satoalepai, Samoa. Growing up, my parents placed a strong emphasis on education despite the challenges we faced. Their unwavering support allowed me to attend Vaiola Church College, where I began shaping my dreams. Initially, I planned to pursue a career in medicine. However, everything changed after my first discovery flight—it was in that moment I knew aviation was my true calling.
Flying for Representation and Inspiration
Becoming a pilot is more than a personal ambition for me; it’s about representation and proving that we can achieve our goals. I wanted to show my Polynesian community that even a girl from a small village can soar to great heights. My journey with Skyborne started before I officially enrolled, as I worked with the organization and witnessed its professionalism and dedication. This firsthand experience made it an easy decision to choose Skyborne as my flight school.
Challenges and Rewards at Skyborne
My time at Skyborne has been both challenging and rewarding. Beyond the technical skills I’ve gained, I’ve formed lasting friendships with fellow students. The instructors here genuinely want us to succeed, and I’ve been lucky to work with incredible mentors like Brandon and Larry. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my growth as a student pilot. Also, my husband David who is my number one supporter and who is a very good teacher as a Skyborne graduate has been instrumental in my journey so far. It’s a testament that Skyborne produces the best of the best.
Overcoming Self-Doubt
As someone from a non-aviation background, managing self-doubt has been my biggest challenge. There were times I questioned whether I belonged in this field. To overcome these feelings, I focused on my progress, leaned on my support system, and reminded myself why I started this journey. With each step forward, my confidence grew, and I began to truly believe in my abilities.
Advice for Aspiring Pilots
To anyone considering a career in aviation: go for it! It won’t be easy, but persistence and passion will guide you through. Stay committed, be patient, ask for help when you need it, and surround yourself with positive influences. Most importantly, never lose sight of your “why.” If I can do it, so can you.
My journey from a small village in Samoa to the cockpit has been a testament to the power of determination, community, and dreaming big. Here’s to many more Samoan pilots joining me in the skies!”
