How Do I Become an Airline Pilot in the USA?

For those with the sky in their sights, becoming an airline pilot is one of the most rewarding journeys imaginable. Yet, with multiple stages and certifications involved, it can sometimes feel daunting.

At Skyborne, we know exactly what it takes to turn your dream into reality. These are some of the most-asked questions we receive, which will help you understand what your pathway to the cockpit looks like and how to take off with confidence.

1. What training do I need need to become a commercial airline pilot?

To fly for a commercial airline in the United States, you’ll need to progress through a structured FAA Part 141 program like Skyborne’s:

• Private Pilot Certificate (PPL): learn the fundamentals of flight and fly small aircraft for personal use
• Instrument Rating (IR): train to fly safely in various weather conditions using only cockpit instruments
• Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL): gain the qualification to be paid to fly
• Multi-Engine Rating (ME): learn to handle multi-engine aircraft
• Certified Flight Instructor (CFI): teach new pilots while building valuable flight hours
• Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate: the highest certification, required to fly as a captain or first officer for an airline.

At Skyborne Vero Beach, Florida, our FAA approved Part 141 professional pilot programs deliver this full journey. You’ll train using advanced simulators, modern aircraft, and expert instruction from professionals.

Many pilots also add CFII and MEI instructor ratings as part of their professional development.

A Part 141 program uses an FAA approved syllabus and can have reduced minimum flight time requirements compared with Part 61, while still meeting or exceeding airline expectations.

2. Which flight school should I choose?

Not all flight schools are the same, and the right training environment can shape your confidence, skills, and long-term career success.

A great flight school combines experienced instructors, with modern aircraft, advanced training technology, and structured programs that prepare you for real-world airline operations.

At Skyborne, our focus is on developing pilots who are ready for the flight deck – an ethos we establish from day one. For veterans transitioning from military service, we offer tailored courses that recognize your existing experience and help you fast-track your journey into a commercial aviation career.

We also partner with major U.S. and international airlines to provide direct pathways from training to employment. Whether your goal is to fly for a regional or global airline, Skyborne ensures you’re fully prepared for your first interview, and ready to step confidently into the flight deck.

3. How do I build my hours to become a commercial airline pilot?

Once you’ve earned your commercial qualifications, the next stage is to build your flight hours – around 1,500 hours of flight experience is required, before being eligible in most cases for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. Most aspiring airline pilots gain these hours by working as CFI, flying charter or cargo operations, or taking on other professional aviation roles that help expand their experience in the cockpit.

As a Skyborne student, you’re supported at this stage with dedicated mentorship and structured development pathways that help you progress efficiently and confidently. Every flight hour is a step closer to your airline career, guided by experienced aviators who help you refine the precision, judgment, and professionalism that airlines expect.

4. How do I get a job with an airline?

After building the experience and flight hours required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), you’ll be ready to take the final step – applying to regional or major airlines.

This stage can feel both exciting and overwhelming. With Skyborne’s career development programs, extensive airline partnerships and strong reputation for excellence, you’ll be well prepared to transition into your first professional role.

Our graduates are among the most employable new pilots in the industry, entering their first airline positions with the confidence, professionalism, and real-world experience needed to succeed. From interview preparation to airline readiness training, Skyborne ensures you’re ready to perform from day one in the flight deck.
