frequently asked questions

You will find much of the information you need about Skyborne within these pages. However we have pulled out some frequently asked questions below. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch using the button at the bottom of the page.

The Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP CTP) is a federally mandated course required by the FAA before a pilot may take the ATP Airplane Multi-Engine (ATM) knowledge test. While every ATP applicant must complete an ATP CTP, the quality, depth, and professionalism of that training vary significantly between providers.

Skyborne’s ATP CTP is designed not simply to satisfy regulatory requirements, but to prepare pilots for the realities of airline training and operations.

ATP CTP requires 10 hours of simulation time (six full-motion and four FTD) and 30 hours of ground training. The course must be taken before the ATP Knowledge Exam. The ATP CTP course requirement began on Aug. 1, 2014.

ATP CTP is your first exposure to the training environment, pace, and expectations you will encounter at an airline.

Skyborne’s approach ensures pilots leave ATP CTP with a solid foundation in automation management, transport category performance, multi-crew coordination, and decision-making skills that directly impact success in initial airline training and beyond.

The ATP CTP consists of 30 hours of instructor-led ground school training delivered in an airline-style classroom environment. Instruction is structured, interactive, and paced to reflect airline academic training. Topics are presented with operational relevance, ensuring pilots understand not only the theory, but how concepts apply in day-to-day airline operations.

Ground school is followed by 10 hours of simulator training (4 hours in Flight Training Device and 6 hours in Full Flight Simulator).

ATP CTP simulator training is designed to replicate the structure, pace, and expectations of airline training environments, tightly integrated with ground school academics to reinforce operational understanding and crew-based decision-making.

At Skyborne, pilots train using advanced Flight Training Devices (FTDs) and Full-motion Flight Simulators configured to replicate transport category aircraft operations. Ground school is scheduled over 4 days with simulator training spanning over 2-3 days.

No. ATP CTP is a stand-alone course and a prerequisite for obtaining an ATP certificate. The training hours from ATP CTP course cannot be counted toward a type rating, even when completed on the same aircraft type.

No, TSA security clearance is not required for the ATP CTP course.

There are no preparation materials for the ATP CTP course. This is a non-aircraft specific course.

ATP CTP covers all FAA-required subject areas encountered on the ATP Knowledge test. Many questions are reviewed at the end of each module. For specific test preparation, pilots use various online applications that aid in preparation for the written test. We will provide you with links to these applications and will also advise on the test-taking process.

The results of the ATP knowledge test are valid for 60 calendar months from the date of the exam.

Upon completion of the ATP CTP course, you will receive a Certificate of Graduation from Skyborne Airline Academy. You will then present the original to an FAA testing center to take the ATP knowledge Test for Multi-Engine (ATM).
