From Lifeguard to Cockpit: Liam’s Journey into Pilot Training

Hear from Skyborne student Liam Slade, who is currently on our FAA Part 141 program at Skyborne.

Discovering aviation through perspective
For Liam, the decision to pursue aviation did not come from a single defining moment. Instead, it developed gradually. Growing up primarily traveling by road and staying close to home gave him meaningful experiences, but also a growing awareness of how much of the world remained out of reach.

Over time, that perspective became a motivator. Aviation appealed to Liam not only as a career, but as a way to connect people, places, and opportunities across distance. When he realised his alternative path would likely keep him tied to a conventional desk-based role in one location, his decision became clear: aviation offered the freedom and mobility he was seeking.

Building discipline in a Lifeguard role
Before entering flight training, Liam worked as a beach lifeguard. That experience plays a significant role in how he approaches aviation today.

Working in a high responsibility, unpredictable environment helped him develop strong situational awareness, decision making under pressure, and clear communication with both team members and the public.

He describes lifeguarding as a role where safety is constantly assessed and reassessed, skills that translate directly into cockpit decision making.

The need to follow procedures, remain detail focused, and take accountability for outcomes became habits long before flight training began.

Early exposure and growing interest in aviation concepts
Liam did not grow up surrounded by pilots or direct aviation mentorship. While a distant relative served in the Air Force and shared occasional experiences, his primary support system came from family encouragement rather than industry guidance.

Interestingly, some of his earliest informal exposure to flight concepts came through video games such as Star Wars Battlefront. While not a substitute for real training, he noticed parallels between game mechanics and aircraft control such as pitch, speed, and turning dynamics, which helped spark curiosity about how real aircraft behave.

Motivation beyond career goals
While aviation offers professional opportunity, Liam’s motivation extends beyond career progression alone.

A major driver is his desire to set an example for his daughter, showing that long term goals can be achieved through commitment, structure, and persistence. He also emphasises the importance of providing financial stability for his family and building a career that allows shared experiences, including travel and exploration made possible through aviation.

Overcoming barriers to entry
Like many student pilots, Liam’s path has included practical challenges, including financial commitment, family responsibilities, and the uncertainty involved in changing careers.

He approached these challenges with a structured mindset, treating training like any high responsibility role. Careful planning, budgeting, and consistent discipline allowed him to stay on track. Rather than viewing obstacles as setbacks, he focused on long term outcomes and maintained steady progress through each phase of training.

A unique perspective from the training environment
One of the more memorable aspects of Liam’s training experience has been his living situation beneath the traffic pattern at Vero Beach Regional Airport (KVRB).

This has created a rare and personal connection to his training environment. His aircraft passes overhead during pattern work, sometimes captured on video by his wife using his tail number as reference. Beyond being a motivational moment, it has also provided informal opportunities to reflect on spacing, wind correction, and pattern consistency from a visual perspective.

For Liam, these moments highlight how deeply integrated aviation has become in his daily life, not just as training, but as an ongoing lived experience.

Moving forward in training
As he continues through the FAA Part 141 pathway under the standards of the Federal Aviation Administration, Liam’s focus remains on building proficiency, consistency, and professionalism.

His background in lifeguarding, combined with his structured approach to challenges, continues to shape how he adapts to flight training demands.

His journey reflects a broader theme common in aviation: pilots often come from unexpected backgrounds, but succeed through discipline, adaptability, and sustained commitment to the learning process.
