Instrument Rating in Three Words: Trust, Precision, and Reward

For Skyborne student Lillie Callahan, earning an Instrument Rating is about more than learning to fly without a clear view outside the aircraft… it’s about trusting her training, mastering the details, and realizing just how close she is to the career she’s been working toward.

If Lillie Callahan had to describe completing her Instrument Rating in three words, she wouldn’t hesitate: trust, precision, and rewarding.

Each word describes a different part of her experience, from learning to rely on instruments when visual references disappear, to recognizing just how she’s shaping herself into the pilot she hopes to be one day.

Learning to Trust What You Can’t See

Instrument flying requires a different kind of confidence. Without a reliable view outside the aircraft, pilots must learn to trust their instruments rather than the sensations they feel in their bodies.

“Trust” is the first word that comes to mind for Lillie, and for good reason.

“When you’re flying under instrument conditions, your outside view is essentially nonexistent,” she explains. “You have to learn to fully trust your instruments and disregard what your body is feeling as you fly.”

But that trust reaches far beyond reading the gauges.

You must also understand what to do when something doesn’t look right. Instrument training teaches one to recognize the signs of instrument failure, identify reliable alternatives, and use first-instinct knowledge to make informed decisions when it matters most.

For Lillie, developing that confidence means knowing not only what her instruments are telling her, but also trusting herself to recognize when those indications don’t make sense.

Where Every Detail Matters

The second word is precision.

In instrument flying, small deviations can have significant consequences. Altitude, heading, and timing all matter, and pilots must learn to recognize changes quickly and make corrections before a manageable deviation becomes a more serious problem.

As Lillie puts it, even a difference of 200 feet can change the outcome of an approach, determining whether a pilot can land safely, must execute a missed approach, or faces a terrain-clearance concern.

That level of precision doesn’t happen overnight. It takes repetition, focused training, and the ability to stay ahead of the aircraft rather than simply react to what’s happening.

Through her Instrument Rating training, Lillie has learned to catch those changes, correct them efficiently, and understand how every decision contributes to a safe flight. It’s a skill set that demands discipline and concentration, preparing her for the responsibilities she’ll carry into the next stages of her aviation career.

When Training Starts to Feel Like a Career

Of the three words, “rewarding” might mean the most to Lillie.

Instrument Rating has been her favorite rating so far in her training journey at Skyborne.

Beyond the technical skills she has developed, the experience has helped her see a clearer connection between the work she puts in every day and the career waiting for her on the other side.

And then there’s the moment it all starts to sink in: passing the checkride and realizing that the hours spent studying, the early-morning flights, the long nights, and everything in between are adding up to something real.

“After you pass your checkride, it starts to feel very real,” Lillie says. “This is what I get to do for my career. How cool!”

For her, earning the rating was more than checking another milestone off a list. It was a reminder of how much effort she has invested in her training and a glimpse of what that dedication can lead to.

One Rating Down. What’s Next?

With her Instrument Rating behind her, Lillie is already looking ahead to her next milestone.

Every new rating brings another opportunity to sharpen her skills, build confidence, and move closer to the flight deck.

For Lillie, the Instrument Rating has been a particularly meaningful step, combining the technical precision aviation demands with the personal realization that the career she has been working toward is becoming more tangible with every flight.

Three words may sum up her Instrument Rating experience, but they also reflect the mindset she’ll carry into whatever comes next: trust your training, pay attention to the details, and remember why you started.
