At any flight school, community plays a key role in how students learn and succeed. For aspiring pilots, the environment around them is often as important as the training itself.
Vero Beach has a long-standing aviation heritage
Over the past 60 years, more than 28,000 of the world’s airline pilots have trained at what is now the Skyborne Airline Academy facility, and we continue to build on this legacy. Today, Skyborne’s Vero Beach base has a sense of community that extends beyond the campus – connecting students, instructors, and the local area.
A global flight training community in Vero Beach
Skyborne students train with people from around the world, while around 15% of students and instructors come from the local Vero Beach area. With our Vero Beach base being home to more than 370 students at any one time, we have created a diverse and international training environment where every student matters.
This international presence brings a global aviation community to Vero Beach, connecting the local area with aspiring pilots from across the world.
Training takes place on a 12-acre, purpose-built campus, designed to bring people together. From shared accommodation to daily flight operations, students and more than 100 experienced instructors work closely, building relationships that often continue into their professional careers. Many of these instructors bring years of airline and operational experience, contributing to a training environment recognized by airline partners and aviation professionals.
Supporting the local community
We’re committed to making an impact beyond the training facility. This is why, since opening our base in Vero Beach in 2021, we have become the third largest recruiter in the area. So far this year, we have made more than 35 new hires, 75% of which are local residents.
These roles span flight instruction, maintenance, operations, and support functions, contributing directly to the Vero Beach economy. At the same time, students living in the area support local businesses and services throughout their training.
We continue to invest in our Vero Beach base, with the recent opening of a new Operations Control Center. And we aren’t done yet. We have exciting plans to improve our training facilities as the academy continues to grow, with the launch of a new Part 147 Aircraft Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) planned for later this year.
Inspiring the next generation of aviators
To us, community also means creating opportunities for future talent. We regularly attend local high school career days, helping students to understand the pathways available in aviation.
We love supporting initiatives like the PreFlight Aviation Camp, which invites girls aged 10-14 from the local area to experience aviation firsthand. These early introductions are essential in shaping future aviation careers.
You’ll also find us at local events including the Vero Beach Air Show and community initiatives such as the Jackie Robinson opening day, where students and employees actively engage with the local area.
