At just 19 years old, I’ve embarked on a journey that has pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined. Growing up in Utah, I was always on the lookout for opportunities that would challenge me and help me discover my potential. After graduating high school in 2023, I knew the traditional four-year college route wasn’t the path for me. Instead, I decided to take a gap year to explore my options and find a direction that truly resonated with me. That’s when I discovered Skyborne Airline Academy at the end of 2023. By July of 2024, I was officially enrolled, and my journey into the world of aviation began.
Fast forward to today, and I’ve proudly obtained my Private Pilot License (PPL). The experience has been both exhilarating and transformative, and I’m excited to continue working toward a rewarding career in aviation.
Why I Chose Aviation and Skyborne
Becoming a pilot was a decision driven by the unmatched opportunities the profession offers. Few careers combine the challenge, adventure, and thrill of exploring the world quite like aviation does. Every flight presents a new perspective and a chance to push myself further. Skyborne stood out to me because of its stellar reputation with airlines and its highly structured training program.
Since joining, my experience has exceeded all expectations. From the very start, the team at Skyborne made me feel supported. Triston Morris (Skyborne Flight Training Advisor), in particular, was incredibly helpful during the enrollment process, guiding me every step of the way. The structured training, high standards, and welcoming environment have allowed me to grow not only as a pilot but also as a student and individual. Seeing the exceptional pilots that Skyborne has produced inspires me every day, and I feel honored to be part of such a program.
The Skyborne Experience: A Community Like No Other
My time at Skyborne has been nothing short of incredible. One of the highlights has been the friendships I’ve built with my fellow students. Sharing this journey with others who are just as passionate about aviation has made the experience even more rewarding. We support each other through the inevitable challenges and celebrate our milestones together, creating bonds that will last a lifetime.
The instructors and staff at Skyborne are exceptional. They are approachable, encouraging, and genuinely invested in our success. My PPL instructor, Patrick Jones, has been an incredible mentor, offering guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support. His mentorship has made a significant impact on my journey, and I’m grateful to have such a dedicated instructor.
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Focused
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a student pilot has been moving 2,000 miles away from my family. Being far from the people who have always been my greatest support system has been an adjustment, especially while balancing the rigorous demands of flight school.
However, I’ve found ways to navigate this challenge. Staying connected with my family through regular calls and texts has been a lifeline. My mom, Amanda; dad, Jamie; sisters, Victoria and Maddisen; and nana, Helen, have been my rock. Their unconditional love and support keep me grounded and motivate me to push forward every day.
The Skyborne community has also been a tremendous source of support. The friendships I’ve built and the guidance I’ve received from instructors have made me feel more at home. This sense of belonging has been crucial in helping me stay focused on my goals.
Advice for Aspiring Pilots
For anyone considering flight training, my biggest piece of advice is to stay patient and trust the process. Learning to fly is challenging, but every step of the journey is worth it. Stay consistent with your training, study regularly, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Your instructors and peers are there to help you succeed.
It’s also important to embrace setbacks as part of the learning process. Struggling with certain skills is completely normal, and progress is far more important than perfection. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, and stay organized to keep your training on track. Above all, enjoy the journey. Flying is an incredible experience that few are fortunate enough to pursue.
Looking Ahead
As I continue my training at Skyborne, I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. This journey has already taught me so much about resilience, dedication, and the value of community. I’m grateful for the unwavering support of my family, friends, and the Skyborne team, and I look forward to seeing where this path takes me. The sky truly is the limit.
