Top questions to ask before choosing a flight school

Student pilot

Choosing a flight training school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as an aspiring pilot. Asking the right questions early on will ensure you select a program that suits your goals and sets you up for long-term career success.

Is the flight school FAA-approved, and what training structure do they use?
Checking your flight school of choice is Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-approved is essential to becoming a commercial airline pilot in the US.

FAA-approved flight schools offer structured, standardized training programs, such as FAA Part 141 , which follow an approved syllabus with defined lesson plans and clear progression milestones.

Alternatively, some flight schools operate under Part 61, which offers greater flexibility, with training pace and structure determined by the instructor.

While both pathways lead to the same FAA certificates, a Part 141 program provides a more career-focused, accelerated structure with a standardized syllabus and clear progress tracking.

What’s the journey from enrolment to airline-ready?
Beyond the training structure, it’s equally important to understand the pathways your flight school offers.

A pilot training pathway should clearly outline each stage of training, how you progress, how it supports your long-term career ambitions, and what opportunities are available once your training is complete.

At Skyborne, we offer a range of FAA-approved professional pilot pathways, designed to align with different career choices.

If you’re looking to become a commercial pilot, our SkyWest Pilot Pathway Program offers a structured route from training through to airline readiness. Our non-commercial pathways, such as our Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) route, allows you to build valuable flight hours while developing leadership and instructional skills. This pathway can also lead to a career at Skyborne, with up to 80 student pilots being recruited into CFI roles each year.

Whatever your experience or career goals, the right flight school should offer a program and pathway that supports your progression and prepares you for your career ambitions.

What are the cost and financial considerations?
Flight training is a significant investment, so transparency around cost is essential.

Before choosing your flight school, be sure to ask:

  • What is included in tuition?
  • Are there additional costs for exams, materials, or housing?
  • Are financing options available?
  • What happens if training takes longer than expected?
  • Understanding the full financial commitment upfront will help you plan with confidence and avoid unexpected surprises.

What support is available beyond pilot training?
Pilot training is demanding, both academically and personally. Choosing a flight school that provides strong student support can make a meaningful difference throughout your training experience.

At Skyborne, we partner with Red Umbrella, which provides mental health support for students throughout their training. A sense of community also plays an important role in wellbeing, with students training alongside others working towards the same goal creating a focused and supportive atmosphere.

How does the school prepare students for airline careers?
Preparing for a career as an airline pilot is about more than just training and certifications. Airlines look for pilots who can have the qualities of a professional pilot, can operate within structured environments and work effectively as part of a crew.

A flight school should reflect these expectations throughout training, introducing students to airline-style operations at an early stage. This includes developing decision-making and communication skills alongside technical ability, helping students transition more confidently into their pilot careers once their training is complete.
