From Jumpseat to Flight Training: Ashu’s Journey to the Flight Deck.
A defining moment in aviation
For Ashu, the path to becoming a pilot began with a moment he will never forget: sitting in the jump seat of an Air India Boeing 747. Being given the opportunity to interact with the flight deck crew, and experience the aircraft from that perspective, was the spark that turned his curiosity into ambition.
Building the foundation for aviation
Ashu’s passion for flying was further developed through Microsoft Flight Simulator, where he gained early exposure to basic aviation principles, stick and rudder control, and cockpit awareness.
While virtual, this experience helped reinforce his understanding and deepen his enthusiasm for flight training.
Alongside this, Ashu was supported strongly by his family, including two uncles who are commercial pilots with Etihad and IndiGo. Their guidance and example helped him understand what a professional aviation career looks like in practice.
Choosing Skyborne after A-levels
Shortly after completing his A-levels, Ashu made the decision to begin his training on Skyborne’s Integrated ATPL programme.
Starting training just 10 days after finishing school was a significant step, but one he felt ready for.
His academic background quickly proved valuable, helping him adapt to the demands of ground school, exam preparation and structured learning.
Additionally, he has embraced the challenge of ATPL-level study, developing new techniques to manage workload, retain complex information and balance both theory and practical training.
Advice for future pilots
Ashu is open about the fact that the transition into flight training is demanding, but he is equally clear that it is achievable with the right mindset.
For anyone considering Skyborne straight after A-levels, his advice is simple:
“You do not need to arrive knowing everything. What matters most is discipline, organisation, and a willingness to ask questions. Carry forward the habits developed during school, stay consistent, and trust the training process.”
A supportive and diverse training environment
Coming straight from A-levels, Ashu was aware that he would be among some of the younger cadets on the programme. However, that concern quickly disappeared.
He has found the training environment at Skyborne to be welcoming, collaborative and supportive, with trainees from a wide range of ages and backgrounds all working towards the same goal. That shared ambition to become a commercial pilot has made it easy to build connections, form friendships and settle into the training community.
