Exploring the next step in your career
You have spent the last few years flying passengers or cargo around the world with the most amazing views. What comes next in your career will depend on your goals. You may be looking for a role with greater stability, more flexible schedules or leadership opportunities, including safety, operations, training management, corporate flying and instruction.
You can enjoy these perks through flight instruction. As an experienced pilot, you will have seen first-hand the influence a strong instructor can have on a trainee’s confidence, judgement, and professional progression. As a flight instructor, you can make a lasting contribution to a trainee’s development.
Why flight instruction is a good transition
Flight instruction is a natural next step if you want to remain closely connected to aviation while taking on a mentoring and leadership role. At Skyborne, instructors do more than teach flying skills; they help set professional standards, guide decision-making and support the development of the next generation of airline pilots.
The role can also be highly rewarding. You can draw on years of technical knowledge and operational experience to support trainees who are now at the start of their own careers. Teaching also encourages continued professional development, as you adapt your communication, reinforce your own knowledge and respond to different learning styles.
If you prefer a classroom-based training role, theoretical knowledge instruction offers another pathway. Theoretical knowledge instructors deliver ground school instruction across core ATPL subjects, including navigation and air law.
How to move into flight instruction
To become a flight instructor in the UK, you’ll need to complete an approved flight instructor training course. You can find Skyborne’s criteria here.
Once you meet the relevant requirements, you will need to complete specialist instructor training and pass an Assessment of Competence before applying to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for your Flight Instructor certificate.
In addition, Skyborne offers Military Conversion Courses to help military pilots gain qualifications for commercial aviation. Once qualified, instructor training is an option for the next stage in your career.
