Integrated vs modular pilot training: which route is right for you?

If you’re considering a career as an airline pilot, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is how to complete your training.

In the UK, there are two main routes to becoming a commercial airline pilot: integrated pilot training and modular pilot training. Both can lead to the same career, but they differ in structure and flexibility.

So, how do you decide which is right for you? Let’s look at the differences.

What is integrated pilot training?
Integrated pilot training could be a good fit for you if you’re looking for a structured, full-time route to the airlines.

An integrated programme takes you from little or no flying experience through a continuous training course, following a set syllabus and timetable.

You’ll complete ground school, practical flight training and assessments as part of one programme, with support from experienced instructors throughout your journey.

Why choose integrated training?

  • Clear structure: Follow a set training schedule with defined milestones
  • Full-time learning: Focus on your training without having to organise each stage separately
  • Consistent support: Progress through a coordinated programme with dedicated instructors and resources

What is modular pilot training?
Modular pilot training offers a more flexible route to the flight deck.

Rather than completing your training as one continuous course, modular training allows you to earn your qualifications in stages.

You can start by earning your Private Pilot Licence (PPL) before progressing other qualifications, such as your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), instrument rating and multi-engine rating, at a later date.

Modular training can be particularly appealing if you already have some flying experience or want greater control over the pace of your training.

Why choose modular training?

  • More flexibility: Plan your training around other commitments, such as work or study
  • Manageable stages: Complete qualifications individually, progressing when you’re ready
  • Greater control over costs: Spread your training expenditure across different stages rather than committing to one full programme

Start your pilot training with Skyborne
At Skyborne, we understand that everyone’s journey to the flight deck is different.

Our UK training options include the Integrated ATPL programme, which offers a structured, full-time pathway, and the Fly First modular pathway, which provides greater flexibility in how you complete your training.

Both programmes include practical flight training at our Vero Beach campus in Florida. But with Fly First, you get to jump straight into the exciting part – getting behind the controls and flying an aircraft yourself, before even starting ground school!

Whichever route you choose, you’ll benefit from experienced instructors, modern training facilities and a global community of trainees and airline pilots, helping you develop the skills and confidence needed for your future career.

Explore our training pathways or contact our team to discuss which option is right for you.
