You’ve just finished sixth form and got your A-Level results. You’re weighing up your options on your next steps, but going to university isn’t one of them.
Instead, you may want to travel the world or get some hands-on work experience. Becoming an airline pilot gives you the opportunity to do both.
Why is now the time to become an airline pilot?
Boeing expects the European market to need over 100,000 pilots in the next 16 years. On a global scale, airlines need over half a million pilots to meet future travel demands.
High demand for pilots translates to a recruitment drive. Essentially, once you’ve completed your training, providing you meet the requirements, you’re in with a pretty good chance of securing a job.
Start your career sooner
Unlike other industries, you don’t have to spend 4+ years in a lecture hall before you’re qualified to become a pilot.
Integrated training is the most direct and structured route into the airline industry. Made for those with little to no flying experience, an integrated programme combines theoretical knowledge, practical flight training and airline preparation into one continuous course over approximately 18 months.
If a direct pathway isn’t quite right for you, modular training means trainees can complete each training stage separately, progressing at a pace that suits their individual circumstances.
Your options don’t stop there. Some commercial airline pilots choose to start their careers in the armed forces before transitioning into commercial aviation. Or you can join a dedicated airline pathway designed to give aspiring pilots a clear route from training into airline employment opportunities.
Join others who didn’t go to university

Kian Mistry [pictured], a trainee on our Integrated ATPL course decided university wasn’t an option for him: “I finished school at 17 knowing that becoming an airline pilot was exactly what I wanted to do. From then, it was a waiting game until I turned 18 and could begin training. That’s why I was so impressed that Skyborne got me onto the next available course just two weeks after my birthday, especially given the demand and waiting lists.
Going straight from A-levels into a professional training environment has been a big step, but one I’m really proud of. The training is challenging and requires a completely different level of discipline and commitment, but it’s incredibly motivating knowing that everything I’m doing is directly building towards the career I’ve always wanted.
What’s made the transition easier is the people. The instructors and staff have been welcoming, supportive and approachable, which has meant a lot starting at a young age. I’ve also made great friends along the way, and that sense of community has made the experience even more rewarding.
